Selected from 90 year-old bush vines, this jammy, easy drinking Garnacha (Grenache) has beautiful scents of violets and blueberry. It’s a full throttle wine with big flavors of blackberry and wild strawberry. Vinification and aging are done strictly in tank to accentuate the pure essence of old vine Garnacha – no oak!

The Cariñena designation of origin is the oldest D.O. of Aragon, Spain and home to some of the oldest vines in the country. Wine has been made here for centuries, starting with the Romans. In 1585, King Phillip II visited the town of Cariñena and locals filled the fountain in the town square with wine instead of water as a grand gesture. To this day, there is an annual September wine festival to commemorate this historic event, and the fountain runs wine for the occasion. Vineyards are located around the central part of the Ebro River in the same locations prized by the Romans when they occupied Iberia. The terrain is harsh and the vines endure very cold nights and very hot days.
More flexible and food-friendly than many big red wines, the Lechuza will be terrific with roasts or chops of lamb or beef. An ideal match would be medium-weight proteins like pork, sausage or duck. Try my Pork and Orange Stew and you won’t be disappointed.
According to legend, lechuzas are witches - brujas - who transform themselves into birds. In most stories, the bird is an owl, but sometimes a bruja will turn into an eagle.
