This Rhône-style blend has an inviting nose of red berries and cherry with notes of cedar, pine needles and smoke. It's light in weight with delicious redcurrant and cherry flavors and an underlying earthy character with easy tannins. Finishes cleanly with finesse.
Blueberry, cherry, plum, red apple, rose petal, cinnamon and pine needle.
Established in 1998, owner and winemaker Seth Kunin's philosophy is simple: when you open a bottle of Kunin Wine, you can be assured from vineyard to glass, very little has been done to alter the purity of the fruit or its natural terroir. Kunin spent years in the restaurant industry before learning the wine business at Gainey Vineyard in Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley. The grapes for his first release came from the esteemed Dusi Vineyard in Paso Robles, and today his wines continue to come from the finest vineyards throughout California's Central Coast.
This wine's relatively supple tannins make it a flexible red, able to pair with lighter fare like salmon, poultry and lean red meats, too. Try it with grilled salmon fillets with an olive relish or lamb kebabs seasoned with mint and black pepper. I've paired it with my Skirt Steak Saltimbocca which is traditionally made with veal, although I have also seen it made with pork, chicken and even with fish. The key is the prosciutto and sage, which both work wonderfully in conjunction with the beef in this recipe. Serve with my recipe for Calabrese Broad Beans and Roasted Potatoes and you have a true southern Italian feast!
The "Pape Star" was inspired by the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Grenache-based blends from this region are honest yet complex wines that are representative of their origins.
