| Pinot Noir | Paso Robles | 2007 |
This tiny production Pinot Noir comes from the Encell Vineyard on an eastern slope of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range of the south Central Coast, about 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean. It has black fruit aromas laced with cinnamon clove and blood orange. It's a rich, juicy wine with a generous texture and an earthy quality. On the palate, flavors of black cherry and black plum are joined by pleasing notes of allspice.
Black raspberry, cherry cola, apricot, red cherry, plum, blood orange, white pepper and forest floor.
John Storey was a founding partner and co-winemaker at the successful Eric Ross Winery since its inception in 1994. Until 2005 he also worked full time as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Chronicle. With the new j.r storey winery, John's mandate is to search out small family vineyards throughout California with the goal of making unique wines with a sense of place that feature a true vineyard identity. Along with this vision, an important belief he holds is that "oak" is used to complement a wine and not mask the beautiful fruit produced by the quality vineyards that he has found to work with. John currently works with two carefully selected vineyards in Paso Robles and one in Sonoma County that express his range of styles in communicating varietal character.
This intriguing Pinot Noir has dark fruit aromatics and a full supporting cast of black fruit on the palate. Couple this with delightful spice notes, and my recipe for Planked Salmon with Honey Balsamic Glaze will work nicely. The sweetness from the honey and the smoky attributes from the grill will play well against the earthy qualities in the wine.
While most of his time will be invested in winemaking, John's love for creating exceptional photographs continues through John Storey Photography.
