There is a delightful aromatic complexity to the Il Trullo. On the nose, black fruits mix with spices, and you can pick up notions of salt air, mushroom and forest pine. Though the wine is young and fresh, it has great depth of color and flavors of dark black fruits, sour cherry and toasty pine nuts. Bottle aging brings out the spicy nuances of the wine, as well as some enticing eucalyptus notes. There's a firm structural backbone but soft tannins on the long finish.

Puglia, the heel and spur of the Italian boot, is rich in art and architecture, which reflect the many cultures that have dominated the region over the centuries. The Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Normans, Swabians and Spaniards among others have all left their imprints there. Puglia's Primitive grape and California's Zinfandel are genetically equivalent, though the various clones make similar though different wines, depending on soils, climate, viticultural practices and winemaking techniques. Il Trullo is made by Villa Italia from 40-year-old vines and bottled young to capture the vibrant cherry fruit which makes Primitivo so immediately appealing.
Since Primitivo is Zinfandel's cousin from Italy, what goes wonderfully with a "Zin" will probably match well with the Primitivo. I put my own spin on the standard chili con carne recipe and the result is my Green Duck Chili. The duck adds a fascinating, complex flavor profile which is both adventurous and thoroughly satisfying.
The Salento Peninsula, the heel of Italy's boot is geologically a giant limestone rock rising out of the Mediterranean. From time immemorial the settlers in this region have used this porous rock to build small mortarless houses called "trullo." They decorate the countryside in clusters and have attracted people the world over who fix them up as vacation homes.
