The richness of this Pinot Gris is noticeable on the first sip. Round and lush with nicely integrated wood, the wine fills the mouth with flavors of nectarine, apricot and Asian pear. The finish is long and clean.
Lemon zest, apricot, white peach, Asian pear and minerals.
Horse & Plow was founded by Vinum Cellars winemaker Chris Condos, who was looking to start a label that would only make wine from organically and biodynamically grown grapes. He uses traditional European methods and aims for elegance and balance in lieu of ultra-ripeness and excessive new oak. Chris’s wife, Suzanne Hagins, oversees sales and marketing for Horse & Plow and is also a winemaker by training. Block 882 is a small planting of Pinot Gris farmed by Robert Sinskey Vineyards in Carneros. It was hand-picked, whole cluster pressed, fermented in neutral French Oak barrels, and aged for 6 months Sur Lie.
A wonderful choice for a leisurely weekend lunch, this refreshing wine will sip beautifully on its own or with a light meal. Dishes with a sweet note and an accent of tropical fruit, such as Asian salads or grilled halibut with a fruit salsa, will pick up fruit flavors in the wine. With its naturally high acidity, Pinot Gris will match the acid of a salad dressing and cut the richness of a curry. The varietal is an ideal accompaniment to fish and shellfish but given the season, I have paired it with my Sally’s Marinated Chicken Breasts.
Chris and Suzanne started Horse & Plow in 2008 making only 600 cases of wine and are currently making 2500 cases. They recently welcomed a son, Dean, and hope to build Horse & Plow into an inspiring future for him.
