The only varietal used for red wines in France’s Beaujolais region is Gamay, which takes its name from a small village in Burgandy’s Côte d'Or (Gold Coast). The color is intense and the bouquet expressive with pretty notes of red fruits, black cherry with a hint of chocolate. More red fruits are revealed on the palate joined by a cedar, earthy note. The Cru of Morgon is known for its impressive structure which reveals itself in this wine with beautiful density.

Cru Beaujolais is one of the most underrated red wines on the planet, overlooked in the hype that surrounds the release of light, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau each year. A part of Burgundy, Beaujolais, has a different climate (warm) and a different soil (granite) than the rest of the region. For over a century, Henry Fessy grew their holdings and reputation before being acquired by Louis Latour in 2008. The brand continues as a reference of quality in the region. The area’s finest wines come from 10 villages designated as cru, one of which is Morgon. Grapes for this offering come from a 50-year-old hillside vineyard just outside of the village.
Cru Beaujolais’s intensity of flavor and great structure make it wonderfully versatile and able to stand up to beef or lamb but won’t overwhelm lighter dishes, even meaty fish. I am going with a lunchtime favorite of Grilled Chicken Sandwiches with Grilled Mushroom Vinaigrette.
To commemorate the centenary of the family winery, Henry and Serges, known for their “bon vivant” approach to life as well as their generous French moustaches, decided to immortalize the facial trademark as the official logo. This family symbol has now become the visual identity of Henry Fessy.
