Hendry Pinot Gris

$18.00

Varietal Birthplace Year
Pinot Grigio Napa Valley 2009
This Pinot Gris came from two different blocks—the ranch’s coolest—each planted with a unique clone. The wine was fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel to preserve the crisp vibrancy. On the nose, Asian pear and white flower aromas are joined by a hint of star fruit. You will taste guava and pear on the palate with a slight notion of almonds. With its lemony, floral aromas and crisp, refreshing zip, a cool glass of Pinot Gris might bring back memories of summer.
Asian pear, star fruit, almond paste and guava.
The Hendry family has been farming the same vineyard in Napa since 1939. The lessons learned in more than 70 harvests provide them with a level of knowledge and a connection to the land that is rare in Napa. The Hendry Ranch is composed of 114 acres of vineyard situated in the hills northwest of Napa. This latitude in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, and allows them to grow 10 different varietals, each carefully distributed among our 47 vineyard blocks. All Hendry wines are made from estate grapes, and 2011 will be the 20th vintage of the Hendry label. Through the subtle use of oak, and restraint in ripeness, their wines are crafted to highlight the terroir of the vineyard.
This refreshing wine will sip beautifully on its own or with a light meal. Dishes with a sweet note and an accent of tropical fruit, such as Asian salads or grilled halibut with a fruit salsa, will pick up fruit flavors in the wine. With its naturally high acidity, Pinot Gris will match the acid of a salad dressing and cut the richness of a curry. The varietal is an ideal accompaniment to fish and shellfish. Enjoy this beauty alongside my Toasted Spice Rub Scallops with Citrus Salad. It is a natural pairing that is deceptively simple but complex all at the same time.
Portions of what is today the Hendry Ranch were some of the first vineyards planted in Napa. Pioneering winemakers Frederick and John Sigrist began planting in 1859 and soon had one of the most extensive vineyards in Napa.
