Aromas of guava, pineapple and Meyer lemon are joined by notions of white tea, fennel and limestone. The Goretti Grechetto initially strikes the tongue with hints of papaya, pears and white peaches. As it expands across the mouth, flavors of underripe mango and lemon pith emerge. The wine is understated with a lovely weight and texture and the finish recalls the wine’s chalky beginnings.

Grechetto is one of the unsung heroes of Umbria, which in turn is one of Italy’s lesser known wine areas. This central Italian region produces a hearty, delicious cuisine famous for its cured meats, olive oils and truffles. While this relatively hot and dry area is known for its deep, savory red wines, it also turns out wonderful whites from the Grechetto grape. The varietal’s thick skin, packed with flavor that comes out subtly during the quick pressing of grapes, allows it to ripen deep into the season to maximize flavor. Low yielding on Umbria’s limestone-laden clay soils, Grechetto produces refreshingly brisk whites. The Gorettis have been producing wine as a business since the 1960s, though the family’s history with wine dates back much longer. A modern facility was constructed in the 1990s, to create crisp, clean and well-defined whites like this one.

Boldly flavored poultry and white fish dishes that sit on the edge between richness and acidity will show off the Goretti Grechetto well. I recommend my Sole Veronique for an easy and satisfying match.
