This wine is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from vines aged between 10 and 20 years. Fruit is sourced from 30 different plots on the estate, all of which are farmed organically. With a lovely deep purple color, it reveals an enticing perfume of Asian spices, incense, lavender, licorice and blackberry. It’s fruity and bold with jammy flavors of cherry, guava, molasses and wild herbs. Structured and well integrated, the Monte Castrillo is a superb dinner red.

Finca Torremilanos farms 30 separate vineyard plots in Ribera del Duero located just north of Madrid. Its inland location makes it subject to temperature extremes, but the vines of Ribera del Duero know how to get around all that mother nature throws their way, and as a result the area produces exceptional grapes. Winemaking on the spectacular estate dates to 1903. A first-class hotel on the property draws visitors from all over the world.
Tempranillo is sometimes compared to a bulked-up Pinot Noir, and like Pinot Noir, it’s versatile with food. But a new-oak-aged wine like this one cries out for red meat. The bold flavors of the wine will stand up well to the rich flavor of grilled lamb or braised short ribs. The subtle chaparral herb notes of the wine also make it a good match for dishes seasoned with fresh or dried rosemary, thyme or sage. Try it with a main course like braised lamb shanks or a grilled rib-eye. Try my suggestion for Pan Roast Lamb Chops with Spring Vegetables with my Definitive Mashed Potatoes for a satisfying match to the wine.
Ribera del Duero is home to the world-famous and highly-prized Vega Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera wines and is dedicated almost entirely to the production of red wine from the Tempranillo grape.
