Nebbiolo is one of the great wine varieties producing big, dark, tannic wines that are long-lived and prized by collectors. Jealously guarded by native growers in Piedmont, very few Nebbiolo cuttings and clones have been exported to other countries. The Filippo Gallino is a high-quality wine with scents of red cherry, cypress, lilac and cedar. On the palate, flavors of black cherry and black plum are joined by hints of dried orange rind and juniper.

The famous Langhe wine growing region of Piedmont lies to the south of its capital Alba. It is characterized by lush, rolling hills, vineyards and winding roads which deliver breathtaking scenery around every corner. Tourists worldwide come here to follow the "wine trail" through the typical areas of Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Nebbiolo d'Alba. The Langhe is also home to the truffle festival held in Alba during October. Each year for about a month and a half Alba is transformed and becomes the world market for truffles. Filippo Gallino and his son, Gianni, farm 30 acres of vines in the town of Canale; at harvest time, the whole Gallino clan pitches in to pick grapes.
This Nebbiolo has notable tannins and will be wonderful with a steak or a grilled veal chop. For something different, try my Andouille Sausage Pizza Pie with Onion Confit and Fontina Cheese. The rich flavors of the Andouille sausage working together with the oven dried tomatoes, sweet onions and two cheeses are magnifico!
The best known Nebbiolo wines are made around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco.
