Feudo di San Maurizo Torrette

$25.00

Varietal Birthplace Year
Petit Rouge Valle d’Aosta 2007

The Torrette is an unusual blend of two indigenous grapes from the Aosta Valley. Petit Rouge is a light and fruity Gamay-like grape and Fumin is a somewhat meatier Syrah-like grape. The wine is velvety smooth with a nose of sweet pomegranate, cinnamon, dried plum and a hint of salted butterscotch. Flavors of tart cherry and under ripe raspberry are enhanced by earthy and savory nuances. You may notice notes of dill, bay leaf and almond shells--a fun find that is the most idiomatic expression of the region.

Pomegranate, cinnamon, tart cherry, dried plum, violets and almond.

The Aosta Valley (Valle d'Aosta) is a mountainous autonomous region in northwestern Italy. It is bordered by France to the west, Switzerland to the north and the region of Piedmont to the south and east. It is the smallest, least populous and least densely populated region of Italy and the only Italian region with no provinces. Winemaker Michel Vallet is philosophical about his rich life in the pristine nature of the Aosta Valley. He goes to bed when it's dark and awakes at dawn. He works when nature demands and rests in the winter when he can spend extra time with friends and family. During the long working hours of summer and harvest he says the privileges of the valley makes him forget the fatigue and allows him to fall in love with every day of life.

The world of wine is always full of surprises. Here's another one: Torrette and Furmin from an obscure part of northern Italy. It is the season for comfort foods that warm the body, mind and soul. I love hearty foods at this time of the year, particularly those that get better when made a day or two in advance (most soups and braises). I am suggesting my recipe for Medium Rare Lamb Stew. Perfect for an outrageously wonderful wine! Serve with a crisp green salad and a crusty loaf of bread.

The Aosta Valley has the highest elevations of any European vineyards.
