Greco Bianco is an ancient variety that arrived in Italy with the Greeks as early as the 7th century BC. The bouquet on the Fata Morgana shows characteristic aromas of acacia flowers and tropical fruits with notes of fresh green grass and spearmint. On the palate, flavors of under-ripe pineapple, papaya and Meyer lemon predominate with a pleasing hint of marzipan. This is a refreshing dry, medium-bodied wine with a velvety minerality.
Fresh green grass, spearmint, citrus blossom, grilled pineapple, papaya, Meyer lemon and marzipan.
Calabria is the southernmost region of the Italian mainland, forming the "toe" of the Italian boot, almost touching the island of Sicily. Fattoria San Francesco, one of the most distinguished Calabrian producers, is in a former monastery dating to 1578 and has been the personal residence of the Siciliani family since 1770. The estate incorporates an entire village with spectacular views onto the Ionian Sea. The wine's name, Fata Morgana (after the Italian translation of Morgan le Fay, the fairy shape-shifting half-sister of King Arthur), is a type of mirage, an optical phenomenon which results from a temperature inversion. Images which would normally be concealed behind the horizon appear distorted in the sky. The first mention of the Fata Morgana phenomenon in English was in 1818, when this type of mirage was observed in the Strait of Messina, between Calabria and Sicily.
Uncork this wine as an aperitif or serve with summer salads, shellfish or creamy pasta dishes. You can't go wrong with my Marinated Salmon with Fennel Salad.
Beware: Too much of this wine may lead to Fata Morgana mirage-like experiences.
