A brilliant light straw-yellow in color, the wine's aromas are keyed on ripe citrus, pear and baked apple, with some high notes of white flowers. Just a touch of sweet, creamy oak helps to round out the wine's aromatic profile. On the palate, it is pleasingly full and fleshy, with flavors of lemon, papaya and pineapple and a firm core of grapefuity acidity.
Asian pear, coconut, pineapple, Meyer lemon, apricot, vanilla and cinnamon.
Manfred Esser started his career in wine working for a large European winery. In 1974 he came to the United States with his Bavarian wife to run a wine import and marketing business based out of Chicago, Illinois. In 1986 he moved to the Napa Valley as President of Cuvaison winery, which he grew to 70,000 cases a year. After twelve years at the helm, he sold his share of Cuvaison and formed Esser Vineyards, which he runs with his wife and two daughters. Manfred may be a well-known consultant in the wine world, but he is also a humble family man who loves people and enjoys sharing his beautiful home on Napa's Spring Mountain.
A great match for all but the richest seafood preparations, it also pairs beautifully with simple poultry dishes and light cheeses, especially chèvre. Also terrific as a refreshing sip anytime! While Chardonnay can be easily overwhelmed by bold flavors, I like this wine with my recipe for Halibut and Corn Salad with Broken Vinaigrette, even though the vinaigrette is intensely flavored. If you want to go crazy since it's the end of the summer, make my Crab and Crawfish Boil (look for the recipe on www.napastyle.com).
Esser literally means "eater" in German. This could be the underlying reason why the Esser family chose to make wine to accompany food.
