Malbec wines and Argentina have become synonymous, and the Doña Paula is an expressive top-shelf example. Give it a good swirl, and you'll notice the intense red color with violet hues that propel you to enjoy the pleasing aromas of baked blueberry, black currant and black licorice. Chewy and sweet, but firm on the palate, a supple dark fruit bomb releases along with sweet tar, licorice, black pepper, mint, truffle and a hint of sweet mocha flavors. The good news keeps coming with sweet smooth tannins, nice body and a supple finish. Malbec was once important in French Bordeaux blends but now finds its best expression in Argentina.
Baked blueberry, huckleberry, black licorice and plum.
Doña Paula was founded by Ricardo Claro, a respected South American entrepreneur, who wanted to establish a well-financed innovative winery producing first class wines for the world stage. The goal is to deliver the true expression and personality of Argentine wines. The vineyards are planted with mature thirty-year-old, top-quality vines with low yields and exceptional fruit. Located in the Tupangato region of Mendoza at 3,200 feet the vineyards are among the highest in the world and thought by many to be the most beautiful.
If Malbec is Argentina's unofficial national grape, then beef is definitely its national food. Serving anything other than steak with an Argentine Malbec is close to sacrilege. Cowboys in Argentina are called gauchos, and they continue to roam the plains. Try my recipe for Jan's Cowboy Steak with Tomato Relish, which is so easy and delicious. Serve with my Roasted Potato Salad or any roast or mashed potato, and your fortunate guests will be saying "Maravilloso."
With wines like this, there will be no more crying for Argentina!
