This is a Vin de Pays DOC wine which is a classification that allows producers to make modern styled wines from grapes outside the rules of their appellation. In other words, the regulations and labeling practices are less stringent that for AOC wines. The Domaine de Castelnau is produced in a lovely, easy, fruit driven style, made for everyday drinking. It's a well crafted Viognier, with a perfumed nose and rich, luscious nectarine, apricot and citrus flavors. Perfectly weighted and delicious.

Viognier is an ancient grape that was almost exclusively grown in the northern Rhone regions of France. Remarkably in 1965, the grape was almost extinct with only 8 acres surviving in the tiny appellation of Condrieu, where it is till the only grape permitted. Fortunately, California came to the rescue as did other parts of France such as the Languedoc where the Domaine de Castelnau is located. The region spans the Mediterranean coastline from the French border of Spain to famed Provence and since the 1980's has been considered to e one of the most exciting and innovative wine regions in France. Christophe Muret is one of the pioneering new breed of winemakers willing to plant non traditional grapes for the area. His delicious Viognier shows he is succeeding very well.
Viognier wines make a wonderful companion to a wide variety of foods, from roast chicken to fish to rich curries to roast pork. For the Domaine de Casetlnau, I like my recipe for Pork Chops with Toasted Spice Rub and Apple Dressing. The snappish acidity and bright floral tones work marvelously with the richness from the spiced pork accompanied by the roasted apple dressing. Serve with a side of my Olive Oil Braised Potatoes and I know all will be gloriously happy at your dinner table!
