The Côtes-du-Rhône region of the southern Rhône Valley boasts mixed clay and limestone soils and balmy Mediterranean weather that consistently deliver remarkably hearty, satisfying and easy-drinking red wines year after year. Wines with the “Villages” designation are considered to be a cut above the average Côtes-du- Rhône because they come from the best growing areas surrounding 18 top wine-producing towns in the region. Claudie and Bertrand Cortellini took over this small 15-acre vineyard in the commune of Castillon du Gard in 1977. They partnered with actor and wine lover Jean-Louis Trintignant in 1985 and embarked upon bottling wine made from their own organically grown, hand-harvested grapes. Their wines were warmly received, and in 1996 the partners were able to purchase another parcel in the commune of Saint- Hillaire d’Ozilhan, expanding their total holdings to about 43 acres of vines.

Because of its fresh fruit, peppery spice and medium-to-full body, this Côtes-du-Rhône is extremely versatile with food, from cold cut sandwiches to roast chicken, cassoulet in the winter or grilled hamburgers in the summer. Excessively spicy dishes and sweet, creamy cheeses like Camembert are not particularly good matches for this wine. You can’t go wrong with my Whole Roasted Chicken on the Cocorico.
