| Jacquère | Eastern France | 2008 |
Jacquère is an alpine varietal mostly found in the Savoy region of eastern France. The Jean Vullien is a fine example with scents of fresh grass, lemon balm, pear skins and cucumber. Sometimes called the "Muscadet of the Alps," it's a light, crisp wine with high acidity and pleasing flavors of apple, pineapple and lemon joined by a refreshing, chalky minerality. The 2008 vintage has been recognized as an especially good vintage.
Lemon juice, pear, under-ripe pineapple and cucumber.
The Savoy wine region of eastern France is distinctly alpine, characterized by pristine mountain air, deep blue lakes and forested mountain ranges. It is also home to spectacular vineyards planted with a number of grape varieties that are rarely found elsewhere. Lying on the fringes of the eastern border of France with Switzerland and Italy, the location is ideal for both skiing and wine, particularly whites, which account for 70% of production-- more than two-thirds are from Jacquère, a low-sugar grape which produces delicate, ethereal wines. Brother's David and Olivier Vullien have a distinguished reputation, and this year the French press recognized the winery as Savoy producer of the year.
This unusual variety from the Savoy region is very rare to find in the USA. Because it is similar in profile to Muscadet, I often pair it with shellfish. With that in mind, my Moules Marinere with Garlic Herb Butter is a good match. The wine's crisp and lively acidity will help cut though the rich flavors of the dish. Alternatively, since Savoy is famous for cheese, try my Fluffy Pancake with Fontina Cheese, a savory pancake that's perfect as an appetizer before and elegant dinner (think Valentine 's Day).
The Vullien family is known throughout France for their vine nursery business. They have been propagating vine plants since 1890 and supply 25% of the Chablis region.
