As the name suggests, this “Prestige” bottling is fancier than the winery’s basic Picpoul because the winemaker picked the best barrels of the vintage for this cuvée. It’s a bright and zesty wine with lime and stone fruit flavors and pleasing scents of limes, white peaches and a hint of the sea.

Purchased by the Cabrol family in 1969, Domaine des Lauriers is a 110-acre estate that’s helmed today by 30-something vintner Marc Cabrol who crushed the grapes for this bottling within 45 minutes of picking them. This minerally, vivid white wine comes from the town of Pinet not far from the Mediterranean Sea in France’s Languedoc region. While most of southern France is red-wine territory, Pinet sits on a bed of limestone soil, which (along with cooling sea breezes) makes a perfect environment for growing the local Picpoul grape.
With its brisk flavors, Picpoul de Pinet is delightful as an aperitif. It also makes a superb partner with sushi or oysters and will complement zesty vegetable dishes and salads, tangy fresh cheeses and light shellfish and seafood recipes. Mildly spicy ethnic fare such as an Asian stir-fry would be an excellent match as well.
The picpoul grape gets its name from the word “piquepoule” which translates to “lipstinger” in the ancient Occitan dialect of the region.
