This California blend is pure and vibrant with scents of red berry fruits, white pepper and baking spices. The wine shows elegant restraint with ripe raspberry and strawberry flavors and hints of clove, pepper and allspice—a very approachable wine with a soft tannin framework and perfect roundness.

Eldorado County in California’s Sierra foothills was once the heart of the gold rush, but today winemaking is a growing source of treasure. David Girard has a law degree, an MBA and a Ph.D. and taught educational finance and law at two major universities. But the lure of the vineyard was always strong. Back in 1998, Girard started out by selling his Merlot grapes to Robert Mondavi. Today he is focused on making his own wine with varieties from the Rhône Valley. Situated at an elevation of 1,200 feet, David Girard Vineyards has the benefit of microclimates and granitic and sandy soils, where grapes such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre thrive in the dry sunshine. Girard is aided by viticulturalist Ron Mansfield who is also well known for his expertise in growing table grapes.
This subtle, spicy blend is a versatile and charming addition to the table. Roast chicken is a classic pairing for lighter, red-fruited wines such as this but pork and lamb would also be a good match.
David Girard Vineyard’s success with Rhône varietals in Eldorado County has prompted visits from top French winemakers—praise indeed.
