Elegant and well-balanced, this Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir has baked red cherry and strawberry aromas with a hint of pomegranate and smoke. On the palate the wine shows flavors of cherry and black plum with nuances of strawberry, rhubarb and yeasty bread notes. On the finish mineral undertones are joined by racy acidity.

Founded in 2003, Mariposa Wine Company is a portfolio of handcrafted artisan style wines that embrace the incredible diversity of California's premium viticultural areas. Fruit for the winery's CrU Appellation Series focuses on artfully interpreting terroir to make premium, artisan-crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This CrU Appellation Series Pinot Noir comes from Monterey County's Santa Lucia Highlands, approved in 1991 as a unique AVA. The vineyards are planted on the southeast facing terraces of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, overlooking the Salinas River Valley. The vines' elevated locations take full advantage of the morning sunshine before the afternoon maritime breezes cool the vineyards.
Mushrooms and Pinot Noir are a classic pairing. Try my Sautéed Portobello Caps and Dijon Garlic Sauce. Cooking salmon on a cedar plank is another great alternative to serve with this wine.
The earliest grape plantings, in what was to become the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation, took place in the 1790s, with the arrival of the first Spanish missionaries and conquistadors.
