The red Corvina grape is the most widely planted grape in the Veneto regions of Valpolicella and Bardolino. The Sant'Alba also includes Rondinella, a minor grape planted exclusively in the Veneto region. The wine is a lovely, supple easy drinker with aromas of plum, smoke, graphite and brown sugar. It has a spicy quality with flavors of fleshy dark berries, cherry wood and a note of cedar and minerals.

The three defining red wines of Italy's Veneto region--dry, powerful Amarone, sweet Recioto and the best known of the trio, Valpolicella--are all made from blends of the same local red grape varieties, primarily Corvina, Rondinella and Mollinara. Corte Sant' Alda is relatively new on the scene but has quickly become a respected producer in the area. It is owned by the charismatic Marinella Camerani and is named after her daughter, Alda. The winery is situated in an old farm building in the centre of the certified organic vineyards which are all hand-harvested. Since 2000 the wines have been fermented in large French oak fermenters using only use wild yeasts to increase their individuality. The wines are then aged in a variety of barrel sizes, made from both oak and cherry wood.
This medium-bodied Valpolicella will work well with robust red meat, duck and game dishes, especially roasts or braises with fruits, chutneys or glazes, but it will also be a good match for certain risottos. Try my Roasted Barley and Mushroom Risotto, which is a blending of California ingredients and Italian philosophy. Serve with a nice green salad and a crusty loaf of bread and presto!
In 2009, Marinella Camerani was named "Grower of the Year" by the prestigious Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso.
