Varietal Birthplace Year
Sangiovese Tuscany 2007
The 2006 vintage was so popular we have decided to bring you the 2007 from this renowned Tuscan producer. This minerally, earthy Chianti Classico produced by the Capponi family at Villa Calcinaia emits aromas of marjoram, seared meat smoke and leather. On the palate it offers very soft and lush fruit flavors, and a touch of leather, earth and cedar backed with good acidity and velvety tannins. This is a mediumbodied wine made in an old world style that is classic but not overbearing.
Dried cherry, dark plum, garrigue, cedar and earth.
The Capponi family was one of the ruling families of Florence prior to the Medici dynasty, having made a fortune in the silk trade, banking and agriculture. They built five palaces in Florence and once owned a vast part of Tuscany. They have a distinguished history as winemakers on their estate in Greve and are known for their love of the land and their distinguished heritage along the Via Chiantigiana, the wine route between Florence and Sienna. In keeping with tradition, Villa Calcinaia is one of the few wineries still using cement casks along with French and Slovenian oak barriques.
This traditional Sangiovese is a versatile food wine. My Polenta Lasagna is a wonderful take on the classic lasagna; rich with sausage, peppers, three cheeses and all bathed in a wonderful marinara sauce. Perfecto! Just don't forget a crispy Italian baguette to compliment the wonders of this recipe. If you are looking for a great party idea, try my Venetian Sausage Bites. I dare you to have just one! How about one more option-- break out your best artisanal salumi and jars of marinated crudités for a superb antipasto platter pairing.
In the film Hannibal, Dr. Fell (Hannibal) is the curator of the Capponi Library and lives in the grand Palazzo Capponi, which still houses one of Florence's most impressive collections of art and manuscripts that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, including original works by Dante. Some of the descendents of the Capponi family still live there to this day.
