The best Spanish Albariño wines should be crisp and tart with a salty, briny edge. This Californian example matches what the best from Spain have to offer with apricot, white peach and green apple aromas and assorted pit fruit, along with citrus flavors with the right balance of minerality and saline. Perhaps the best West Coast Albariño we have tasted.

Originally grown in northwestern Spain’s Rias Baixas appellation and also in northern Portugal, the Albariño grape is finding a home in California and Oregon. But too many of the wines don’t quite match their Iberian counterparts. After serving in the Peace Corps in Ecuador, Ian Brand came to Monterey to surf and then discovered that his undergraduate environmental science degree was useful background for winemaking. He learned the trade at Bonny Doon, and then became assistant winemaker at Big Basin. In 2007, he partnered with John Allen, owner of Coastview Vineyard, in making Coastview Vineyard and Le P’tit Paysan wines. Chualar Canyon is his own brand and we are excited to support him.

With its clean flavors, razor-sharp acidity and ocean freshness, Albariño is a perfect match for grilled fish and shellfish. It can make a fine contrast to foods that are rich, salty, oily, fatty or mildly spicy. The Chualar Canyon will also pair well with light, zesty chicken dishes.

Albariño’s home in Rias Baixas in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain is characterized by deep inlets of water encroaching many miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. This popular tourist area has been likened to the Garden of Eden.
