This classic Côtes du Rhône blend is well integrated with cherry, black tea and pine aromas. On the palate the soft cherry is joined by red raspberry flavors and notions of dried cherry and damp earth. The Rouanne can stand up against the more expensive bottlings of the fancier Châteauneuf-du-Pape region to the south.

Vinsobres is the most northerly village of the southern Rhône apart from Valreas, and the late-ripening fruit has a cooler character than hotter appellations further south such as Vacqueyras. The village earned its stand-alone appellation status in 2004. Rouanne is run with conscientious style by Marc Ferrentino, who is considered a new talent to watch. Since 1998, he has transformed the Domaine from a supplier to negoçiants to an artisan producer bottling some of the best and most character-full wines in the region. Ferrentino is a big, warm-hearted man and softly spoken through a thick Provençal accent. He farms 78 hectares of mainly old vine Grenache magnificently sited on south facing limestone and clay hillsides just below the village of Vinsobres.
While this charming Rhône blend provides a low-key backdrop to full-flavored grilled meats and game, it’s best suited to pork and poultry. You could get fancy with a roasted pheasant or Cornish game hen with herbs or try my Chicken on the Cocorico with Roasted Garlic Butter. The wine’s roundness, restrained tannins and modest alcohol levels also allow it to embrace spicier preparations. It is a superb accompaniment to youthful soft and semi-hard cheeses, as well as smoked and cured meats.
