Château de Vaugelas has a powerful, ripe, flattering nose of black fruit and spices and is warm and velvety on the palate. Using classic local grapes of Grenache, Syrah and old-vine Carignane, winemaker Georges Pauli has produced a modern styled yet classic Corbières wine. Vinified in stainless steel, the wine is aged for one year in oak barrels to add complexity and roundness. Exuberant and at the same time elegant, this is a fine wine from an appellation better known for more rustic reds.

Corbières is an appellation located in the Mediterranean Rim part of France known in general as Languedoc-Roussillon. It is one of the largest appellations of origin in the region and is home to many flavorful and inexpensive wines. Many top-notch producers from other regions have long recognized the potential of this area and are involved with ventures of their own or in concert with others. Château de Vaugelas Le Prieure is a beautiful estate, once part of the Abbaye de Lagrasse, whose vineyards were first planted by Benedictine monks in the 18th century. The terroir is fantastic: gravely and well draining, thereby encouraging deep roots on the vines and low yields. The Bonfils are renowned landowners and winemakers in the Languedoc and this estate, their home for five generations, is their pride and joy--the jewel in the crown.
This is a great wine for all seasons, from summer grilled fare (perhaps even with BBQ sauce) to richer meats and savory dishes in the colder months. When I tasted the Château de Vaugelas, I thought of lamb with mint as the wine has a fascinating interplay of rich fruit, wonderful spice and savory aromatics and flavors. My Lamb Lollipops with Mint Salt is a perfect pairing! The richness of the lamb enhanced with the mint, dances and plays with the bold flavors in the wine.
