Rosé is perfectly suited for warm weather and summer holiday fun. The Grand Chêne is a blend of four grapes, with Cabernet Franc leading the way. It has pretty aromatics and is mouthfilling yet crisp and refreshing with plum and cherry flavors edged with a citrus note.

Brulhois is located south of Bordeaux along the Garonne River. In 1984 the recognition of the region as an "appellation d'origine" established the quality of the wines and the fervor of the vignerons (winemakers). Château Grand Chêne has been in the Delpech family for five generations and is named after the 700-year-old oak tree that dominates the entrance to the estate. The tree has seen a great swath of history in the region, including the occupation of English armies in the 14th century. Today, Michel Delpeche heads up the association of growers of Brulhois and is a determined advocate of the wines on behalf of his fellow winemakers.

During summer, Rosé is the go-to wine for lunch along the Mediterranean shore from Spain to Greece. Grilled fish and shellfish are excellent companions as are salads. For lunch on a warm day, uncork the Grand Chêne with my Napa Nicoise and start planning your trip to Europe.

No doubt the 14th-century British occupiers enjoyed the local wines under the shade of the Grand Chêne (big oak). Probably a welcome change from ale, which was an important source of nutrition in medieval England.
