Varietal Birthplace Year
Zinfandel Sonoma Valley 2007

The 2007 growing season proved ideal for Zinfandel, and on the heels of a 91 and a 90 score, this vintage stands proud at 90 points! The 2007 Giana Zinfandel is full of ripe black and red fruit notes, including notes of black cherry, boysenberry and toasty vanilla aroma with a great spice in the finish. It is completed with 1% of our Old Vine Petite Sirah to prop up the ripe fruit and spread out the layers of flavor. This vineyard is named after my youngest daughter, Giana, and farmed like a Cabernet for high quality, not high yield. As my very favorite food wine, I drink Giana Zin with everything from red-sauce pastas to grilled meats and smoky BBQ to, well, all by itself!

Stewed rhubarb, red grapefruit, white pepper and spearmint.

My estate-grown, limited-production wines have been a labor of love since 1998. The spicy rich Zinfandels are named after my three daughters, Felicia, Roux and Giana, and are hand-crafted from vines around my house in the heart of the Napa Valley. The Felicia is made from 95-year-old vines that were planted before Prohibition. In contrast, the Giana is an ode to the number-one selling wine in my restaurants. We "borrowed" the budwood from our friends at Rafanelli vineyards in Sonoma, and what you taste is the result of many years of tender care.

Zinfandel's tendency to produce wines that are high in both tannin and alcohol calls for rich food with enough fat and protein to bring out its softer side. Grilled meats, especially fatty selections like duck, sausages, and pork or beef ribs fit the bill nicely, as do braised stews of lamb, beef or game. In my opinion, the Giana is particularly well suited for my recipe for Cowboy Steaks on the Grill. Alternatively pour a glass and accompany with a wonderful aged Mountain Gorgonzola drizzled with roasted walnuts? Delicious!

I like to brag about my two Gianas: my offspring, and also the offspring of my vines.
