This wine was so popular last year we have brought it back with the new vintage. Negro Amaro is a dark, brooding and bitter grape. Blend it skillfully with Malvasia Nera and you get a highly scented, dense, rich and rustic wine that is like a good gift: it gives and keeps on giving. Plump, juicy and super ripe, it has aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, licorice, blood orange and menthol. The mouth is complex, exposing dried currant and brambleberries with mocha chocolate and sensuous, velvety plums. The finish is long and inclusive with a good strong structure and balanced acidity.
Blackberry, licorice, menthol, blood orange, graphite and dried currant.
The winery was founded in 1979 by Giovanni and Teresa Cantele, along with their two sons Augusto and Domenico. This distinguished wine family has northern Italian origins, but they chose the distant Salento Peninsula in Puglia as the ideal location to extend the family wine legacy. The peninsula forms the high heel of the Italian boot that straddles the Adriatic and Ionian seas. With a focus on ancient local varietals, the Cantele reputation continues to grow. Salento, and particularly the capital of Lecce, is home to the architectural movement known as Barocco Leccese, involving the elaborate carving of marble.
Salice Salentino wines hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Puglia, and the wine deserves a distinctly Italian companion at the table. Make a Tricolore Salad and follow it up with the my Lasagnette of Eggplant and Goat Cheese and a crusty loaf of bread.
Because of the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed the "The Florence of the South."
