The aptly named Rockpile AVA is a remote, high-country growing area, where the unforgiving terrain and soils stress the vines into ripening. The demanding landscape brings out the best in this selection of grapes. The Senal is a proprietary blend of Branham Rockpile Vineyards and is a superb example of the complexity and depth rendered by this appellation's terroir. Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and blackberry waft from the glass and are repeated on the palate. Only 300 cases of the beauty were produced.

Winemaker Gary Branham studied enology and viticulture at UC Davis and has worked at wineries in California as well as Australia and New Zealand. He founded Branham Estate wines in 1994 and grows 80 percent of all the fruit that he uses in his wines. The ranch consists of 240 acres of wilderness located in northwest Sonoma County and was once part of the historic Rockpile Ranch, which was an 18,000 acre sheep and cattle ranch. He is one of a handful of growers pushing the paradigm of ultra-premium hilltop fruit. Within a decade of planting, grapes from this area became so highly prized that the Rockpile AVA was established.
This marvelous Branham with its complex blend of grape varietals, intriguing aromatics and fascinating flavors deserves a special dish that will do the wine proud. Try it with my Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Sauce. Serve with my recipe for Baked Pommes Frites (great for soaking up the sauce) and a green vegetable to round out the meal.
The actors on the TV series "Bonanza" bought Rockpile Ranch in 1986, but lost it all to foreclosure in about a year.
