With its crisp flavors, minerality and unusual body, the Matelica Riserva will be terrific with fish and shellfish. In the port city of Ancona, the capital of the Marche region, local seafood such as sea urchins, tuna, anchovies and sweet shrimp are often enjoyed raw, with a cool glass of Verdicchio. For cooked fare, try the wine with simple dishes like flaky white fish with butter and a squeeze of lemon.

This outstanding interpretation of Verdicchio is highly nuanced with a rare level of texture and body that is rarely seen for the varietal. Tropical fruit aromas dominate with notions of white peach, apricot and almond shell. Flavors of under ripe papaya and pineapple have a kiss of spicy vanilla and there is a refreshing minerality on the finish.

Belisario, founded in 1971, has built its reputation on Verdicchio wines. This Verdicchio di Matelica (D.O.C. 1967) finds its roots in the hilly, mineral-rich, limestone soil along the foothills of Italy’s Apennine Mountains in the Le Marche region. The inland location with a combination of warm days and cool nights gives a longer growing season, which in turn ensures a unique, refreshing white wine that is growing in popularity. Until recently, the best known Verdicchios from Le Marche were Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, a zone closer to the Adriatic Sea where the wines can include up to 20% of Malvasia and Trebbiano.

Though the Verdicchio grape is grown in several Italian regions, the most admired versions of the crisp, almond-edged white wine come from Le Marche, on central Italy’s Adriatic coast.
