This nicely focused Chardonnay is made in a New World style and definitely has all the bells and whistles. Peach and red apple aromas invite you in, but a quick swirl reveals notes of butterscotch, candied lemon and spicy wood. Butterscotch returns on the palate with lemon chiffon, apricot, pear and a hint of anise. This wine is a perfect example of a great Chardonnay that does not have to cost a ton of money.

Achilles and his two immortal horses, Balius and Xanthos, were legendary and heroic figures on the battlefields of ancient Greece. The warrior and his fearless horses were often depicted with black paint on clay wine vessels, or amphorae, as a celebration of their heroic triumphs. The Balius label is the winery’s nod to the fabled heroes represented by the black figure pottery of ancient Greece, and all of our Balius wines are reflections of the world-renowned appellations throughout California. The fruit for the Balius Central Coast Chardonnay was sourced from top vineyards in Monterey, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties, and displays unique characteristics from each of the three regions.

The Balius Chardonnay is both firm and robust, making it a perfect match for soft, rich foods like halibut with lemon-caper sauce or seared scallops with brown butter and corn. Its tropical notes will complement shrimp scampi or fish with fruit salsa, but it also pairs well with simple fare like roast chicken with potatoes or watercress salad with mustard vinaigrette.
