The Jemrose Syrah has layers of silky smooth tannins that coat the palate and a crisp acidity that gives the wine structural depth. There are aromas of dark blueberries, boysenberry and blackberry with hints of dried meats, cocoa, cinnamon, smoke and spice. This is a bold, juicy wine that will benefit from a few hours of decanting.
Boysenberry, bramble blackberry, roasted black plum, allspice, lavender blossom and dark chocolate.
Bennett Valley in Sonoma is a relatively new appellation of only 700 acres of growing area sandwiched between the better-known appellations of the Sonoma Coast and the Sonoma Valley. Marked by rocky, volcanic soil, it has a long cool growing season thanks to its elevation and exposure to coastal fog which leads to long hang times for the fruit. Currently Baldassari is one of only two working wineries in the area, though it hosts as many as 40 different vineyards. Winemaker Matt Michael attended the U.C. Davis winemaking program and worked in New Zealand and California wineries before making wine for himself.
Lamb is a great match for this bold red, whose tannins and full fruit flavors call for proteins accented with a bit of sweetness or herbs. Chicken, turkey or pork served with grilled or roasted fruits (plums, apples, apricots) would also play well to the flavors of the wine. My Grilled Lamb Chops seasoned with the NapaStyle Herbes de Napa is an easy option.
Less than 100 cases of the Baldassari Jemrose were produced.
