Pazzo, which means “Crazy” in Italian, is a fun, unpretentious blend of Sangiovese and other grapes. It received very high marks from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, who called it “ sexy, seductive…always spicy, herbal, but with loads of red and black fruits.” A fresh strawberry component shines through, joined by hints of clove and orange-covered chocolate. The tannins are firm and ripe.

Bacio Divino, meaning “Divine Kiss,” is the creation of renowned maverick winemaker Claus Janzen. Sangiovese is a hard grape to grow successfully in California but in 1993 Janzen discovered a superb Napa source. Taking inspiration from renegade French and Italian winemakers, who were blending all sorts of non-standard grapes with Cabernet, he initiated his own practice of what the French call “Assemblage.” Each varietal is fermented and aged separately with separate oak regimens before the magic process of experimentation and blending begins—a bit of this…a dash of that…a sip here…a sip there.
