The Syrah in this spicy, generous red blend came from a century-old vineyard, whose small, intense grapes give the wine terrific depth. The wine has ripe red and black berry scents tinged with fresh ground pepper. Keep swirling and hints of clove, cedar and violets reveal themselves. Its juicy, velvety flavors of blackberries and licorice have a spicy edge.

Once an owner and CEO of a family company that made millions of cases of wine a year, John Fetzer now occupies himself with a boutique winery that produces a tiny fraction of that amount. His Atrea and Saracina wines come mostly from grapes grown on the rolling hills of his 600-acre organic estate in Mendocino, a region north of Sonoma on the California coast. As seems to be standard with semi-retired millionaire vintners, a star winemaker consults: in this case, Napa legend David Ramey, whose protégé, Alex McGregor, helms the winery day-to-day. Their collaborative efforts resulted in this unusually delicious red, an idiosyncratic blend of Zinfandel and old-vine Syrah, with dashes of Petite Sirah and Malbec.
The Old Soul will work well with spicy or herb-rubbed pork, chicken, steaks, ribs and chops, roasted or grilled. In my recipe for Chicken with Roasted Lemon and Rosemary Sauce, boneless chicken breasts are cooked with potatoes, and the sauce is flavored with roasted lemon juice and rosemary and then finished with a little butter. The wine's rich character is the perfect complement to the opulence of the buttery, citrusy chicken.
John Fetzer's career in the wine industry spans nearly a half century, from his early childhood working in the vineyards at the 1,000-acre Fetzer home ranch in Redwood Valley, California, to his ascendancy to the position of CEO of Fetzer Vineyards in 1981 at the age of 35. Fetzer was sold to Brown-Forman in 1992.
