The fruity nose on the Athair Chardonnay has aromas of kumquat, guava, passion fruit and pineapple. You might even pick up a hint of lightly flavored popcorn off the glass. The wine is well integrated and restrained with a mix of honeysuckle, melon and pear flavors and notes of nectarine and walnut.

Athair is Irish Gaelic for "father." The name was chosen by winemaker, Jim McMahon, to honor his Irish heritage and his father and other father figures in his life who supported his dream to make wine. Jim honed his skills at Kenwood Winery in Sonoma and at Luna in Napa before partnering with his father-in-law, Tom Keith, to form Athair. His father's passion for Russian River Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is alive and well in the son.
This wonderful American beauty calls out for something from the sea. Since it is Dungeness crab season, I am going to prepare one of my family's all time favorite foods, my Famous Roast Garlic Crab. The crab will work fantastically with the Chardonnay's lime zest, kumquat and tropical fruit aromatics, and wonderful palate sensation of lemon custard citrus. This is absolutely perfect holiday fare!
