Varietal Birthplace Year
Tempranillo Rioja 2005
Tempranillo forms the foundation of red Rioja wines, but according to Spanish wine laws, three other grape varieties are allowed in the wines, including Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. The 2005 Antano Reserva is a traditional blend composed of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 5% Garnacha. It is aged in American oak for 12 months before spending an additional 24 months in bottle. Having had plenty of time to mature and develop, this 7-year old red wine features complex aromas and flavors of dried cherry, baked plum, leather, tobacco, rosemary blossom and lavender. This classic, old school Rioja is medium- to full-bodied with the oak, tannin and acidity nicely integrated.
Baked plum, black cherry, orange zest, tobacco.
Located in north-central Spain, Rioja takes its name from the river (rio) Oja, a relatively small river that winds its way through the region before joining the much larger Ebro River. Wine has been made in the area for nearly 2,500 years. In 1926, Rioja became the first Spanish wine to be granted Denominación de Origen (DO) status, and in 1991, the region received the prestigious “Calificada” (Qualified) designation, making it Spain’s first Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa). Considered the “heart and soul” of Bodegas Antano, José Luis Ruiz Solarguren purchased the estate in 1988 and immediately began to restore the vineyards and upgrade the winemaking facilities. By honoring tradition while using modern equipment and techniques, Solarguren’s Bodegas Antano has quickly developed an international reputation for quality and consistency.
From wild mushrooms and roasted meats to complex rice dishes, Rioja wines are known for their exceptional versatility with food. Tempranillo, like Pinot Noir and Sangiovese, has characteristics that make it compatible with food, without overwhelming it. While Rioja pairs well with most meat and poultry dishes, it shares an ancient love affair with lamb, which is so popular in Spain. But, there is always a place at the table for beef, too. Everything from meatloaf to a rib eye steak just off the grill makes for easy options.
Bring a bottle of Antano’s Reserva to a potluck dinner, where a profusion of different foods is likely, and you will be welcomed as a friend, and leave a hero.
