One of the world’s great table wines, Montepulicano d’Abruzzo is fruity and savory and wonderfully soft on the tongue. Fermented in stainless steel and matured in the bottle rather than in oak barrels, this concentrated, fruity red has an inky, saturated purple color with mulberry jam, cherry compote, plum, cinnamon and chocolate aromas, and fresh black and red fruit flavors with hints of tar and forest floor.

Directly east of Rome, Abruzzo is close to the eastern Adriatic coast of Italy. Anfra is a relatively young winery, especially by Italian standards. The Savini family bought its first vineyards in 1968, made its first wine in 1997 and released its first vintage under the Anfra label in 2002. “Dedication to the earth” has been this venture’s motto from the beginning, and that dedication shines through in its top-ranked Montepulciano. Once regarded as a simple country wine, Montepulciano has evolved, and now top vintners produce serious wines filled with a luscious, black-fruited complexity that can rival reds at twice the price. Nero dei Due Mori is Anfra’s top bottling, crafted from a selection of the vintage’s best barrels.
Abrruzzo is known for rich, robust red wines that are ideal for roasts and grilled meats of all kinds. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a hearty wine, packed with flavor and good acidity, but relatively low in tannins. It matches well with a variety of spices and herbs and complements salty foods, but it doesn’t necessarily require protein-rich dishes to tame its moderate tannins. It’s most often paired with lamb, but sausages, savory vegetable dishes and strong cheeses are also good matches.
This wine should not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a Tuscan wine made from Sangiovese and other grapes, but not the Montepulciano variety.
