| Cabernet Sauvignon | Paso Robles | 2006 |
The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon begins with intense aromas of black fruits and leathery spice. The palate is deep and juicy, unfolding with ripe flavors of plum, cassis, black cherry and mocha. Supple tannins are interwoven into a long, chewy finish.
Black brambleberry, juniper, forest pine, plum, mocha and coffee.
Ancient Peaks is a family-owned winery specializing in wines from their estate Margarita Vineyard in Paso Robles on California's Central Coast. Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the only vineyard in its vicinity, nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, amid the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, the vines yield fruit with sleek natural flavors and remarkable balance. The name Ancient Peaks is a tribute to the towering mountains that surround Margarita Vineyard, and to the fossilized soils and climate-shifting terrain that ultimately distinguish the wines. Ancient Peaks and Margarita Vineyard are owned by three longtime local winegrowing families--the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms--who are actively involved in the daily operations of the vineyard and winery.
The Ancient Peaks needs something rich, preferably with blue cheese, to complement its flavor profile. I am torn between my Grilled Pesto Marinated Skirt Steak with Blue Cheese Fondue and my Mushroom Crostata with Blue Cheese. I still want to take full advantage of my barbecue before the chill starts setting in, so I am suggesting the steak recipe. Alternatively, the mushroom crostata with a green salad makes for a terrific lunch or even an elegant first course for dinner.
Margarita Vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774. This unique site is well worth a visit.
