This superb Tempranillo offers a deep ruby color with an intense bouquet of drunken black cherries, black currants, anise seed and tarragon. Sun-warmed blackberries play on the palate with dark plums, bitter chocolate along with hints of tanned leather, charcoal, chicory and forest floor. The Alicena's smooth and silky mouth-feel accents its rich fruit expression, with freshly grated nutmeg on the back palate. Just the right amount of tannins keeps the wine's balance in check.

The Alicena is made by the Viña Santa Marina Winery near Mérida, the capital of Extremadura in southwestern Spain. Mérida was one of the most famous Roman towns of the Iberian Peninsula and features some of the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe. Indeed, recent excavations on the property revealed the presence of a Roman village including a winepress! Though it is clear the Romans made wine on the site, the actual Viña Santa Marina winery is relatively new. The founders brought together a wealth of experience to make wines with a modern style that can showcase the potential of this lesser known region.
